National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage increases from April 2020

National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW) rates have increased from 1 April 2020. The hourly rate for the minimum wage depends on your age and whether you’re an apprentice; however you must be at least ‘school leaving age’ to be entitled to it.

The Apprentice rate applies for apprentices that are under 19 or for those who are 19 or over in the first year of their apprenticeship.  If you are an apprentice but you’re aged 19 or over and have completed the first year of your apprenticeship then you will be entitled to the minimum wage.

It is a criminal offence for employers to not pay employees the correct wage rates, and if HMRC investigates and finds that they have not been paying the correct rates, than an employer must pay back any arrears immediately plus be fined and possibly named by the government.
